Count Alexander Rostov has been put on house arrest, serving his sentence in a tiny attic in the Metropol, a grand hotel, right across the street from the Kremlin.  However, Rostov is introduced to the path of self-discovery while he is forced to helplessly watch the world go by outside his window.
