While World War I battlefield nurse Bess Crawford is tending to a wounded French officer, he snaps at her in German, leading to much confusion about his origins.  Matron offers a perfectly reasonable explanation, but Bess is still left with questions and when the officer vanishes to the streets of Paris, Bess goes after him looking for answers.
